Mr. Surfishin, I have not been able to visit any high school contests but do intend to start shortly now that Easter and Passover are behind us. Defender of the Holiday Season

The Bishop O'Connell vs Northern of Calvert this Saturday sounds like a great match-up.

Rules question: on a "bobbled" fly ball, when are the runners allowed to leave the bag for advancement to the next base? Upon final catch (control of the ball)? or after first contact is made with the ball?

The question really is, whats the rule? Our center fielder had an over the head catch, upon initial contact with the ball she "bobbled" it. Before she had control of the ball the runners advanced. The runners were called safe, because they left the bag after initial contact was made with the ball.

The runners were called safe, because they left the bag after initial contact was made with the ball. That was ruled correctly. The rule is that you may leave at 1st touch. The reason is to avoid the confusion of when control is established.

I would think the reason is to not allow an outfielder to "bobble" the ball all the way into the infield to keep a runner from advancing.

Hey GW, any college games "of local interest" worth following this weekend ...

Mr. TRT, the local teams around here "suck" so I don't think there should be any interest whatsoever. But what I do say is that it will be "interesting" to see the Maryland team finish its regular season against Florida State. Maryland is 8-7 in the ACC (but would have been 8-10 had they played North Carolina). Maryland will be 8-10 in the ACC after this weekend (8-13 if you follow my logic). This coach and this team is still in the underbelly of the ACC. Nothing has changed. But I do believe, with no inside information whatsoever, that Maryland may get a berth in the NCAA because their record against bums looks pretty good and they have a good facility to host the Regionals. So let's see how this plays out. Defender of Mediocrity
