BTW GW, what is your take on the Orioles signing New Zealand fastpitch player Pita Rona?

Heavy, I think it is a good thing that the Orioles have signed a New Zealand softball player. Fastpitch softball is more difficult to hit than baseball and if the kid has talent, the transiition will be easy. He won't have to worry about screwballs in baseball. Defender of the Submariner

I'm stunned. Do you laugh? Unbelievable. It seems like you guys have it hard for this guy. Why? What is so "unbelievable"? He is a pitching coach and he was hired as a pitching coach. Seems believable to me.

He'll talk himself right out of a job. He knows everything and everybody. Strange hire. Did French ever see him coach before?

Maybe Sandman put it best. Strange hire. At D-1, I would imagine it comes with some qualifications.

Seems believable to me. You are correct, he was hired as UMBC's Pitching Coach and I'm sure he'll do just as well there as he always did with his Chesapeake Lady Chargers, Inc. After all, he learned what he knows about pitching from one of the best Pitching Coaches around ... Lisa Costello, the Head Coach at Towson University !!!

TRT, the preseason poll putting Maryland 5th is just about right and could possibly be putting them too high. A sad commentary on the supposed progress made by the leadership down there. Is Maryland hosting another Regional, because that seems to be the way to get that team in the NCAA tournament? With Hickey gone this team will fade big time. As far as the UMBC hire, I would like to know what happened to the assistant coach there? This seems to be a last minute, I need somebody fast, hire. I do know that assistant coaches are difficult hires due to the lack of money out there in the mid major programs. Doing it at the last minute is almost impossible. I will leave it to further debate on this message board as to the qualifications of this individual but on the surface they don't appear to match the need that UMBC has in the America's East playing field. What happened to Jill Dorsch? Wasn't she the assistant? Some kids I know worked with her at a clinic and really liked her and learned a lot from her.

They seem to turn over a lot of assistants there. Just sayin'.

GW, It seems to me that pitchers on the top D1 teams are walking a whole lot of batters. Are they afraid to pitch to them or is this just an early season thing? It seems to me that walks will end up hurting these teams

Did anyone attend the UMBC Clinic on Saturday? GW, were you able to hover over the event?
