First of all, who cares about soccer? Secondly, this Nichols guy is a goofball anyway. He coaches an academy team and would rather have that, be the end all be all, than his high school team. In his high school world he has to worry about admissions and distance from school etc. This change makes his world better and puts him in a position to make more money for himself. Thirdly, this scenario doesn't fit well with softball because there is such a strong off season set of teams out there (although not many locally) that do what these academies do. There is also the effect of weather, which is when the high schools play so that doesn't interfere with the best time to play the game. Also, US softball is arguably the best in the world so if it ain't broke don't fix it. Soccer here sucks internationally so they are apt to try anything that people like Nichols proposes.
