Just a rumor with a little verification. Word on the street is the RB Spirit 18U Gold has folded. Verification is that the number one pitcher and gatorade player of the year from Maryland has made a decision and is now on the Vienna Stars roster (good move in my opinion) also an outfielder with good wheels from the roster has moved to the Vienna Stars.
Unfortunately this probably leaves a few girls in limbo. Heres to hoping they land on their feet with a team that will help them achieve their dreams. Although they may have to travel to make that happen.

The phone lines are probably jumping as we speak, so to say. Lol!

If this is all true, I'm sure most of those girls have found a home already. And, if this is true, it's sad how a team can "go under" just because of a few players. Do they really "make" the whole team successful? Two players doesn't fit my definition of a TEAM.

Yes one plaYer made that team go and it was the pitcher and yes they can choose from the many teams that have gotten no one to college or one of the ones that says we would like to congratulate player X, she will attend Y college knowing full well player X will not plat Y college. They could go to a team that has not gotten a girl in a real school since the coaches daughters were there or maybe one who advertises full rides when in reality the players parent works at the university. It is the said state of softball that MD is in. Note to players and parents. If your team is goin to TNT and/or Newtown as you major showcases, you are not on a team that is doing what needs to be done to get recruited.

Well, there are no less than 100+ Gold/Elite/Showcase teams for them to choose from! Look at the 16 and 18U teams on USSSA - they all think they're college recruitment material, even if they had a crap record last year. Record doesn't mean sh^^.A team can play a crap schedule and have a great record or can play a challenging schedule and have a .500 or worse record. Truth of the matter is where does the team play and who do they play. College coaches don't care if you are an A team beatin up on B and C teams. They want to see how you play against good teams. As to the Gold part the only teams that should call themselves gold are those who go to gold nationals each year. And, the elite b.s is stupid too.

Ghost writer, Lets start withplaying in tournaments that have coaches at them. Be on the main complex not a middle school field 25 miles away. Have someone other than a team mom or dad speak with college coaches about the team during the game to avoid missing opportunities. Provide players and parents with info and updates of conversations with coaches about players and trends. How about the organization help the parents and players with the process of coach contact (email, letters, phone calls). This can go on and on because it actually takes a lot. Some kids are godd enough that it will be easy but others need to be in front of lots of coaches to catch on. The bottom line is there are not many teams doing these things in MD. This is why so many girls end up in VA, PA, NJ and afew in FL.

1. Talent 2. Excellent Grades ( you could interchange these) 3. Opportunity ( meaning you play in good showcases, go to clinics hosted by colleges, get seen playing against good competition) 4. Persistence - Do your homework, write e-mails to coaches, let coaches know when and where you are playing, follow up 5. Know your level of talent and commitment 6. Have a travel coach that helps. 7.Luck. But we know that luck = hard work, preparation, and opportunity. There is no secret formula. But, I do know that you can't get recruited if you don't get seen.

Mr. Letemfly, very nice answer. Here's my take on the recruiting process. The "big" college teams have connections with the "big" Showcase/Gold teams. The recruiting is therefore done by these Showcase team coaches. It all happens at that level. The big colleges aren't looking at their emails for that next great player. They are calling up Newtown Rock and other teams to get them what they want. The same is mostly true for the mid majors although they may have to stumble on local talent every now and then. The Towson State University program is an example. They have pipelines that they draw on to get players. Their coach couldn't effectively and cost efficiently travel the country scouting players. The lower D-1 and then D2/D3 schools are the ones that generally will follow up on some emails and get to see players, but their budgets are limited. Look at the good D-2 teams like Kutztown, their players don't generally come from far away. The problem locally is that their aren't enough good players to form a team that is good enough to get to play on the main field at these showcases. You may get an occasional team here and there, depending upon the year, that gets to play prime time but it is not going to be that frequent. Therefore, the better players must go out of town to get seen. The critical mass is not here in Maryland. Defender of the Recruiting Process

GW. I can't argue with your take as we see certain organization putting multiple players on the same team. Wagner's has Salvarola on USF and soon Nunn will be reporting there also. The TN Fury consistantly puts players on the UT roster and these in my opinion are not by luck but rather by design. I am also seeing that many players get into schools based on parental influence (ie. boosters) major contributors to programs happen to have their children recruited to their alma maters.

It is unfortunate but it is just the way GW described it. I have watched girls verbal to schools this summer that have no business playing in the SEC, Big East, and ACC programs. However, they played on the right travel teams and the coaches like players from certain programs that have an established track record. They will take them based on potential. The sobering thing is some of the parents will be paying as much as 50% of the tuition just to say their daughter plays for that particular program. If they had dropped down to a mid-major with a great academic reputation they would have received full rides based on athletic and merit scholarships, but daddy wanted to wear the tee-shirt and visor to the showcases and tournaments so everyone could see him!

Mr. Juan Epstein, sorry about Horshack. Getting back to recruiting, these travel ball coaches are like rock stars with some of these college coaches. They are power brokers basking in the glow of the girls and their eager beaver dads who kowtow to them. It is not inconceivable that girls get on big time teams because a coach recommends them and not because the College recruiting is that exhaustive. Look at the ACC, there are players on some of these teams that are not as good as players on say UMBC or Towson. Heck, several kids have played for Maryland that couldn't make it elsewhere. What separates the really good teams and the rest of the crowd is the top level pitching and usually 3 or so elite players. The rest is filler on these teams as well. 110,000 Football Fans in Nashville today. Only 2,000 more than the 108,000 Fastpitch Softball fans that attended the ASA Men's Championships in Michigan a few years back! lol. BTW ... Anyone ever hear of the "Bent Arm" method of pitching Fastpitch Softball?
